Google has bought Go Kart engine maker Go Kart (GK) Engine for $1.5 billion.
The deal, announced Wednesday, gives Google a significant piece of the small engine market in the United States, where many companies make engines for electric vehicles (EVs) like Tesla’s Model S and Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class.
Go Kart will now have access to a much larger market, and the new owners will be able to accelerate development of new technology and services, according to Google.
Go Kart Engine is based in Los Angeles, California.
It makes two engines that go up to 300 horsepower each.
It will be sold to a number of other carmakers, including GM, Toyota, Ford, Nissan, BMW, and Fiat Chrysler.
It has been around since 2005, according the company’s website.
In its announcement, Google said Go Kart is currently developing a new generation of the Go Kart’s engine, called the GT engine.
The new engine will allow Go Kart to further advance its electric vehicle technology, which was initially focused on the development of low-power engines for the Chevy Volt.
The acquisition comes a year after Google bought the smaller engine maker GT Engine, which makes the electric Chevy Volt electric.
